Tanacetum parthenium extract is one of the active components of Praevens. This herb has traditionally been used in the treatment of headaches and other conditions. Treatments that include Tanacetum are able to relieve headaches and improve quality of life. A combination of Tanacetum and Zingiber has been shown to be effective in relieving headache. The mechanism of action of the parthenolide, the bioactive component of Tanacetum, for its anti-headache effects, consists in a partial agonism of the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) channel, together with the desensitization and dysfunctionalization of nociceptors, resulting in inhibition of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) release within the trigeminovascular system.
